Tesla To Cease Production Of Roadster | Auto-Moto

By the end of the Summer, the electric vehicle manufacturer will stop taking orders for their $109,000 Roadster S as they transition their sales focus on the Model S sedan.

Just last week, Tesla filed a regulatory agreement to purchase an additional 100 bodies from their supplier Lotus. These "gliders" allow Tesla to continue sales through mid 2012. This also means that there will have only been 2,500 Tesla Roadsters ever built for sale. Amazing.

As for the Model S...

The 7 passenger luxury performance sedan looks to wedge itself into competition with the BMW 5-Series with a 0-60 mph time of 5.6 seconds and a mileage range of 160 to 300 miles. Tesla has already stated that their intent is to begin sales with their higher end version, Signature Series, mid 2012 at $77,400. The price may sound steep, but consider the 2011 550i with it's fully loaded price at $73,000 and 0-60 at the mid 5s. Move over Bimmer.
